Skechers Suing Adidas Saying It Had An Advantage In Signing Top Players - Who Would Skechers Sign?

[Courier Journal] - The shoe company Skechers is suing Adidas, claiming it was at an unfair disadvantage as a result of the alleged schemes involving the University of Louisville and other colleges that have been revealed during the FBI’s investigation into college basketball.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in California, argued that “illicit payments denied competitors like Skechers who play by the rules a fair opportunity to compete for the cachet of having trend-setting high-school and college athletes seen in their products.”

Skechers claimed it “has been harmed due to increased advertising and marketing costs and lost sales, market share and goodwill” as a result of Adidas’ actions.

I mean who the hell does Skechers think they are here? Skechers, a company which has never sponsored a basketball player nor has ever been worn by anyone playing basketball at any level is suing Adidas because they think there’s an advantage to signing top players? No shit there’s an advantage to signing top players. You’re Skechers! You sponsor Matt Kuchar, who sure, he’s my favorite golfer but he’s not drawing in the eyes like Adidas guys.

However, let’s take a look at who Skechers would target in the NBA right now:

1. Dirk Nowitzki - a complete no-brainer here. Dirk is old for NBA standards and really goofy. Just go take a look at his text message history with his trainer. Would fit right in with Howie Long and Matt Kucher.

2. Kevin Love - Fit in, not out. Seems like a tagline Skechers would use as well as the Cavs.

3. Kyle Anderson - Slo-Mo has the definition of ‘old man’ game and always has had that. Skechers are made for older dudes. Again, maybe Skechers is onto something here with this lawsuit.

4. Al Horford - Doesn’t do anything flashy, shows up and is a bit underrated. Built similar to Howie Long too and I’m thinking of a buddy-buddy commercial with Howie and Al here.

5. Kyle Korver - Skechers is made for old white dudes. Kyle Korver is currently an old white dude in the NBA. Let’s just call a spade and a spade here.

Honorable mention: Nick Collison, who announced his retirement today. A Kansas dude who played his entire career in Seattle and Oklahoma City. That’s the key demographic Skechers had to be looking for.

In all seriousness this is a laughing matter. Now, what will be interesting to see if Nike and Under Armour try to get a lawsuit against Adidas. I’d like to bet there’s a good chance we don’t see that simply because then they could be exposed here. Let’s not be naive this wasn’t just an Adidas thing. Either way, good for Skechers. All pub is good pub.
