Saquon Barkley is Using His Bonus Money to Get Rid of His Dad's Jets Tattoo

Lord help me, I’m a sucker for a good Draft Pick Human Interest Story. A young man who’s overcome all sorts of adversity standing there on Draft Night seeing his dream come true. Kids from broken homes. Poor rural areas. Crime-ridden city streets. Who worked hard, fought through all that adversity to make it to the NFL. And to be able to pay back the people who guided them to the precipice of success. Moments like that just get me right in the plums.

And I’ll argue that no one has a more uplifting story than Saquon Barkley. It can’t have been easy to grow up in a household with a father who’s got a Jets tattoo. Even growing up in the Bronx being inspired by Curtis Martin (my favorite Jets player of all time and it’s not even close) I have to believe it was hard to be raised by a man bearing that mark of shame. I mean, who does that? Just because Bill Parcells gave you a nice run for about three seasons before he got bored and left you for the race tracks of Florida (only to have Bill Belichick drop you like a burning log) was no reason to make a mistake you’ll carry with you for the rest of your life. And that reflects badly on the whole family.

So good for Saquon that he overcame all that. And now he can afford to right that wrong. It’s almost like hearing a guy say he’d made it and now he can pay for a sick loved one’s operation or something. He’s got a brand new baby. A promising career ahead of him. And soon a father who won’t bear the humiliation of being a Jets fan any more. That’s something we can all feel good about.
