You Could See The Isaiah Thomas Situation Coming From A Mile Away

VIA USA Today: Los Angeles Lakers point guard Isaiah Thomas is set to have arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome right hip on Thursday, the team announced Wednesday. He will be out indefinitely.

Thomas, who was traded to the Lakers from the Cleveland Cavaliers in February, was sidelined for seven months after suffering a torn labrum in his right hip in last year’s playoffs. He made his season debut on Jan. 2 with the Cavs and played in 15 games before being traded.

Surprise, surprise, surprise.

It was probably the most dramatic NBA off-season ever (which was awesome). An argument I found myself in constantly was about Boston trading Isaiah Thomas. For some ungodly reason, there was a group of people that actually tried to make the argument that he is a better basketball player than Kyrie Irving. Kyrie. Irving. I don’t need to remind everybody, but there were Celtics fans legitimately pissed off that Boston traded him to Cleveland. These people were high on some good shit.

These people should also know they were dead wrong by now.

Never mind the fact that Isaiah HEALTHY isn’t a better point guard than Kyrie, but then you add on the questions about his long-term health. His hip was OBVIOUSLY a serious issue back then too. I hate to be frank, but he kind of became damaged goods after last season. He was great as a Celtic PG, especially in 2016-2017. I mean he finished 5th in the MVP race. But that was his peak. It’ll never be better. It was lightning in a bottle and Danny Ainge knew it.

As somebody who covered Boston sports on the day that the trade was announced, I was ready to name Trader Danny the smartest person alive. Kyrie Irving on the team I cover!? YESSIR.

And of course, the keyboard heroes came out with their BLAZING hot takes.

In true coward fashion, he deleted his tweet. Thank God the internet never forgets.

PS – I don’t know if you guys know this, but I have boobs. Watch out.

Folks, this why good general managers don’t get emotionally attached to their players like fans do. I realize that what Isaiah did for the few seasons he was in Boston was worthy of praise. Plus, there’s something big to be said that he played through an awful family tragedy the way he did. I know I couldn’t do it. It was impressive.

BUT: Business > Feelings. Danny Ainge saw up-close what loyalty can do to a winning franchise in the 80s. It’s allowed him to be more shrewd when he builds his teams. That’s just good business.

I hope the best for IT, truly. When he’s healthy, he’s a lot of fun to watch. Plus, he seems like a nice guy who really cares about what he does for a living. But between the self-promoting max-deal talk, the custom money sandals, the constant whining about loyalty, bad breakup-like talk that neeeevvver ended (until his new team also traded him) and the video tribute drama, I’ve been long over it.

And today I was given more vindication. He wasn’t a fit for the Celtics anymore. Or apparently the Cavs either. Danny Ainge just dunked on everybody in the league because he knew something way in advance that they didn’t. Again.

But hey, shoutout to the guys who can’t come up with a good argument and talk about my boobs instead. I’m proud of them too.
