Should America Just Make Hazeltine The Permanent Ryder Cup Host Because We Won There Once?
Pretty diabolical move by America here. We hadn’t won a Ryder Cup since 2008 but we finally win one at Hazeltine so we send it right back to Hazeltine. Literally 30,000+ golf courses in America but we won at Hazeltine so we find the next available slot and slip it right in there. There are countless golf clubs across the country with memberships that would move heaven and earth to host a Ryder Cup. Imagine how cool it would be at Cypress or Newport Country Club or National Golf Links or Sand Hills or Gozzer Ranch or Bandon Dunes. Maybe some of those places don’t have the space or don’t want the chaos of a Ryder Cup. I don’t know, I haven’t talked to all of them but that’s not the point. The point is there are a million sweet places to host this event, to mix it up, to showcase all the amazing golf courses our great country has to offer. You could go hundreds of years without repeating Ryder Cup venues but we’re going back to Hazeltine twice in just four American Ryder Cups. Incredible. No place in the US has hosted multiple Ryder Cups. Europe will send it in 2014, 2018, and 2022 to Scotland, France, and Italy respectively. We’re going to Hazeltine two out of four years.
Here’s the list showing the diversity of Ryder Cup venues since the turn of the century.
2002 – The Belfry, England
2004 – Oakland Hills, Michigan
2006 – K Club, Ireland
2008 – Valhalla, Kentucky
2010 – Celtic Manor, Wales
2012 – Medinah, Illinois
2014 – Gleneagles, Scotland
2016 – Hazeltine, Minnesota
2018 – Le Golf National, France
2020 – Whistling Straits, Wisconsin
2022 – Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, Italy
2024 – Bethpage Black, New York
2026 – TBD
2028 – Hazeltine, Minnesota
I mean at this point fuck it let’s just make Hazeltine the permanent host. Let’s make Hazeltine the Augusta of American Ryder Cups. All our guys can take up membership and play Hazletine 50x a year. Maybe even install some trapdoors in the Euro team room and kidnap anybody who wins a match. It’s genius. Winning over everything.
USA! USA! USA!
