Tommy Smokes
Honestly, this was a click-bait headline and I don’t really have anything new to offer on Tommy Smokes. But, while you’re here, let’s talk a little bit about semicolons.
You see, the semicolon is very underused in modern writing. I know. I know. “But Chaps, Kurt Vonnegut once said that the only reason to use a semicolon is to show people that you went to college.” While I see Kurt’s point, one can argue that college is actually good. In fact, I give being educated 4.8 Balls.
Now, let’s go over the semicolon. I started this conversation with my pal John last night.
The comma is simply not strong enough to separate two independent clauses. The independent clause can also be thought of as a simple sentence. What I mean by that is the independent clause is a complete thought; the independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence. I hope this helps in your writing. Just remember, if you don’t use a semicolon and in its stead, you use a comma, you are going to be writing comma splices; no one wants to see that, my friends.
Maybe next time we will talk about subordinating conjunctions. Whoa. That would be a hoot and a half!
