Jose Altuve Agrees To Five-Year, $151 Million Extension With The Houston Astros

Donald Trump Welcomes World Series Champion Houston Astros To The White House

The reigning, defending, undisputed American League MVP is going to be staying in Houston for the foreseeable future. The Astros picked up a $6 million club option for Altuve for this upcoming season, and still hold a $6.5 million club option for 2019, so the five-year extension for the 27-year-old second baseman will keep him under team control through the 2024 season.

After the 2019 season in which Altuve will make a criminally low amount of $6.5 million, Altuve will be making an average annual value of $30.2 million over the life of his five-year extension. Over the last four seasons, Altuve has hit .334 with an .880 OPS, leading the league in hits every single year, eclipsing 200 hits in each season. Since the start of 2014, Altuve leads the majors with 845 hits, nearly 100 more hits than the next closest player over that four-year span (Charlie Blackmon, 747).

Job well done by the Astros to keep a huge piece of their core in place, as they try to win now and in the future. They didn’t try to pull any of that hometown discount bullshit either, breaking the bank for a player who most certainly deserves it.
