Throwing It Back To The 1996/97 NHL All Star Jerseys

1996 46th NHL All-Star Game: Western Conference v Eastern Conference

The NHL All Star Game is coming up this weekend so I figure now would be a great time to throw it back to some of the greatest sweaters ever created. I try not to care too much about ASG jerseys considering they’re only worn once and then we rarely ever see them again. If they suck, then they suck. If they’re decent, then that’s good. But it’s not like All Star Game jerseys are exactly hot ticket items. That is, of course, with exception to the 1994-97 NHL All Star Game jerseys which–to this day–might be one of the hottest jerseys of all time.

There’s a reason why you’ll still see these jerseys being worn by fans in NHL arenas way more frequently than any other all star sweater. Everything about these uniforms were perfect. The colors. The design. The accompanying 1990’s hockey gear. And most importantly, the players who were wearing them. I know that the time is going to come when we remember the All Star teams of this era the same way that we remember the All Star teams of the 90s. But they’re just not at the same legendary status yet. Think about who was playing in these games.

You had Gretzky, Lemieux, Jagr, Messier, Kariya, Selanne, Lindros, Bourque, Yzerman, Sundin, Sakic, Forsberg, Tkachuk, Recchi, Brodeur, Roy. All of these guys are considered some of the greatest to ever lace ‘em up. The majority of these guys are already in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Like I said, there’s going to come a day when we look back on rosters with Crosby, Ovechkin, Matthews, McDavid, etc with the same level of nostalgia as we do with the 96/97 teams. But we’re still years and years away from being able to compare these two eras of players. Combine the fact that the 96/97 all star jerseys beat the shit out of this year’s and there’s really no competition.
