After a week hiatus due to the winter break/World Juniors we are back this week with another Spittin’ Chiclets college hockey top-10. Pretty tough to be too hard on teams this week, as most teams who played this past weekend were without some of their best players who are playing in Buffalo at the World Junior Classic.

So let’s get started. #4 Denver, a team I have dubbed the best team in college hockey is still riding the struggle bus. After a big come back loss to Dartmouth on the 16th, Troy Terry and the Pioneers fell to Merrimack on home ice, 3-2 and spanked Air Force 6-0. It definitely isn’t good to see Denver losing games to teams like Dartmouth and Merrimack, teams they should beat with ease. But like I previously mentioned, it’s tough to be hard one a team who is missing their best player (Henrik Borgstrom) to the WJC, but it’s a team sport, so figure it out Denver, you’re making me look bad.

#1 SCSU went to the Hobey this past weekend to skate to two ties against the Tigers of Princeton. Missing forward Ryan Poehling to the WJC, definitely had an affect on the team. Poehling, who has been a PPG player for the Huskies this year has 15 points in 14 games this season. The Huskies have #9 Minnesota this upcoming weekend and better pray that Casey Mittelstadt misses his flight from Buffalo. The kid has been lighting it up at the WJC and Is coming back hungry as ever for his squad to make a Natty Championship run.

#7 Ohio State is a team to keep an eye on. After sweeping #9 Minnesota before the winter break, the Buckeyes returned to sweep Niagara this past weekend. Huge fan of Mason Jobst. Got to see him at Bruins development camp and he was one of the best kids on the ice. Great to see the undrafted Junior Captain from Indiana have success this season, with 21 points in 20 games there is a good chance Jobst will be one of the most sought after free agents after the seasons end if he opts to go pro.

#9 Minnesota makes their return to the top-10 this week, at 12-9-1 it was certainly a disappointing first half for the Gophers as Casey Mittelstadt pointed out on Spittin’ Chiclets this week. But the team is loaded with talent and will be playing with some vengeance in the second half of the season, as Mittelstadt pointed out, they believe they absolutely can win a national championship.

Celly of the week:

Has to go to my guy Brady Tkachuk. The BU freshmen scored the game clinching shootout goal against Canada outdoors and then just goes super cocky, super nonchalant, come-get-some celly. Unbelieve.

Goal of the week:

Minnesota Gopher, Team USA stud, and the most recent guest on Spittin’ Chiclets Casey Mittelstadt gets the goal of the week this week. What a stud. What a god damn stud. This kid is literally putting the boys on his back and leading them to gold by scoring goals like this.
