10. Minnesota State
Not many changes to the top-10 this week, due to a majority of the teams in college hockey already having started their winter break. The only change this week comes in the 3-4 spot. #4 Denver let the nerds from Dartmouth come into their barn and beat them 5-4. The Pioneers opened up Saturday night with a 3-0 lead against the 3-8-1 Big Green, only to blow the lead and allow Dartmouth to score five unanswered goals to come back in win.
So this week, Denver comes in at #4 and Clarkson gets the bump up to #3. I said it last week and I still believe it, Denver is one of, if not the best, team in the entire country. From Tanner Jalliet to Troy Terry to Henrik Borgstrom, DU’s roster is loaded. With winter break on the horizon, I’m sure Denver looked past the two (now three) win Dartmouth team.
#8 Northeastern was another team in action this weekend, heading to North Andover on Saturday night to face the Warriors of Merrimack. The two teams played to a tie, but most importantly Adam Gaudette scored his 50th goal of his college career and is four shy of the school record.
#2 Notre Dame is a team to keep an eye on in the second half of the season. The Fighting Irish come out of the winter break with a home-and-home against Michigan, a series against Wisco followed two straight weeks on the road, playing at Minnesota and at #9 Penn State. All extremely tough places to play, but lets keep in mind Notre Dame hasn’t lost since before Halloween. All November and all of December with out a single loss. If the boys from South bend can keep rolling, I may put the pot on the Irish to win it all.
#6 North Dakota is another team I like in the second half of the season. Granted they went 0-1-1 against #1 SCSU Dec. 8th & Dec. 9th, St. Cloud is #1 for a reason. The 10-5-5 Fighting Sioux will come out of the break with series against Nebraska-Omaha and Bemidiji State, hopefully two series that allow them to get back on track before they play UMD and #4 Denver.
CELLY OF THE WEEK:
Cam Strong got the comeback against Denver going for Dartmouth on Saturday night with his 1st of the season. Said it once and I’ll say it again, the first goal of the season always is the best celly. You have been thinking about what you’re going to do for months.
GOAL OF THE WEEK:
Goal of the week has to go to NU’s Adam Gaudette. Not only did he hit the puck out of mid air, he added a nice celly to the goal that tied the game.
