Russell Westbrook And Nick Collison Dressed Up As Sidney And Billy From "White Men Can't Jump"

Ok first of all, I just learned that Spike Lee did not direct White Men Can’t Jump. Nor did he write it, produce it, or have any involvement at all. Did anyone else think this was a Spike Lee joint? WMCJ has been a Spike Lee movie in my brain since forever, and I don’t think I’m the only person who thought that. My certainty that Spike made the move was so absolute that had anyone tried to bet me that he wasn’t, it’s the kind of thing where I would have said “I’ll bet you a MILLION DOLLARS.” I would have been wrong, and then I’d be calling dad for a loan.

Maybe I thought that because of Google?

If you google “Spike Lee White Men Can’t Jump,” this is the first search result. A bunch of nonsense and then, bottom right, Director: Spike Lee. Fucking google. Maybe the Chinese were right and we can’t trust it.

Russell Westbrook and Nick Collison nailed these costumes, for sure. But I feel it would have been way more progressive if Nick had played Wesley Snipes, and Russell had played Woody Harrelson. It’s 2017 and we’re not supposed to see color anymore. Having the black athlete play the black athlete harkens back to the racial landscape of yesteryear. So predictable, so ignorant. I’m not saying that Collison should dress up in black face, because that’s racist. But they could easily switch the costumes around and I think we’d all appreciate their choices with an open mind.

PS- how stoked do you think Nick Collison was when Russ asked him to do this with him? “YEAH ABSOLUTELY I’LL BE RIGHT THERE LET ME JUST CALL MY PARENTS FIRST. MOM! DAD! RUSS ASKED ME TO PLAY THE INFERIOR, GOOFY WHITE GUY ON HIS BASKETBALL TEAM. I KNOW, I KNOW, I CAN DRAW ON MY OWN EXPERIENCE! HAHA I THINK THAT’S WHY HE CHOSE ME! K LOVE YOU BYE!”
