HuffPo- A New York restaurant is getting chewed out on social media after an employee referred to an Asian customer as “Ching Chong” on a takeout receipt.

The woman went to Cornerstone Cafe and ordered steak and eggs to go on Aug. 16. When she looked at the receipt, she noticed that a server, identified only as “Rubi,” used the racial slur “Ching Chong” as the customer’s name.

The woman showed her daughter the offensive receipt, and her daughter in turn shared it with a friend known on Facebook as “Ziggy Chau.” The friend then shared an image of the receipt on Facebook, where it quickly went viral.

Chau at first asked for a boycott of the restaurant and suggested that people call it directly “and let them know they have a racist staff.”

She added:

“Racism has no place ANYWHERE. Asians friends??- speak up for ALL… not just when it affects you, please. Can you please share this to your page? Hate to get political but in light of what is happening here in the USA and our current president seem to make it ok to come out and be blatantly racist.”

Her request has led to a bunch of stinging reviews on Yelp.com.

Later that day, the restaurant manager issued this apology on the business’ Facebook page, according to NBC New York:

“This situation leaves me no choice than to terminate this employee for this unjustified act. It definitely does not reflect the way the Cornerstone staff or I think because of one individuals stupidity.”

Oh Ching Chong. Call me old-fashioned, call me an asshole… but I can’t avoid laughing when I hear that term. Ching Chong! There’s something so lovely about the phonetics of the phrase– the alliteration, the punchiness… it’s a perfect joke. Of course, it’s easier to say that when you’re not a member of the targeted group. I used to hate being called a ginger until I learned that some girls actually fetishize red hair, which is some straight-up psycho shit but I’ll take what I can get.

Of course the patron went straight to Facebook and rallied the troops, who took to Yelp to excoriate the restaurant. And everyone knows that a bad yelp rating is worse for business than a C from the health inspector. Amazing to think that this restaurant will probably go out of business because one server took the liberty of flexing her comedic muscles. Notice how I said server and not waitress? It’s 2017, people. Stick to unmarked gender-neutral nouns. And don’t call Asian people Ching Chong, even though it’s funny.

PS- I won’t mention the irony of a woman named “Chau” being a key player in a restaurant story.

PPS- it could always be worse…
