Of Course Steven Matz Will Require Elbow Surgery To Repair Nerve Damage And Is Out For The Season

Los Angeles Dodgers vs New York Mets

MLB- Starting pitcher Steven Matz has been diagnosed with irritation of the ulnar nerve in his left elbow, the Mets announced on Monday, and he will undergo surgery “to reposition the nerve and eliminate the irritation.” The procedure has not yet been scheduled. Matz, who underwent an MRI and CT scan on Monday, has struggled mightily this season since returning from left elbow issues that kept him out until June. The 26-year-old went 2-7 with a 6.08 ERA in 13 starts. His last time out on Thursday, the Yankees knocked him around, scoring seven runs (six earned) in 3 1/3 innings. Regardless, Matz refused to use the injury as an excuse while addressing reporters on Monday after the Mets’ 3-2 extra-innings loss to the D-backs.

Look, I want to be mad. I want to scream from the top of a mountain about how the Four Horsemen of Flushing are more brittle than Ryan Mathews’ bones. But I can’t get that worked up. The real Four Horsemen of Flushing aren’t Syndergaard, deGrom, Harvey, and Matz. They are Fred Wilpon, Jeff Wilpon, Ray Ramirez, and Terry Collins. I wasn’t sure how a rotation and farm system with the arms the Mets had would fall apart. But The Four Horsemen of Flushing was the answer the entire time. Put cheap owners, an awful manager, and Dr. DL into a cauldron, mix them together, and you get the 2017 Mets nightmare. Throw in trainer Mike Barwis as their manager and the recipe of doom is complete. Not even Tim Tebow’s 30th birthday could save this team. All they have done since that day was get swept by the Yankees, lose a series to the Marlins, and lose Steven Matz to an elbow injury.

As for Matz, I sure as fuck can’t get too worked up against him either. I just watched the Giants season flash in front of my eyes with Odell Beckham’s leg turning into Silly Putty. I can’t worry about the pitcher that went from the lefty of our four aces to the lefty version of Zack Wheeler that you legitimately forget is alive for months at a time while he is on the DL. I bet the last few seasons have even drained every ounce of optimism out of Grandpa Matz.

The one bright side is that deGrom had this surgery last year and came back pretty fucking strong this season. But if every pitcher was like Jacob deGrom, the world would be a much better place. Lets just put every other person on the 40-man roster into the MRI machine today and schedule whatever surgeries are necessary to take care of all family business now so we are ready for 2018, the season in which the Wilpons just sold a bunch of players for so they could acquire cash to go out and spend for this winter (just kidding, they are definitely going to pocket every last cent).
