There's An Asteroid That Came Out Of Nowhere, That's Going To Miss Us By Only 27,000 Miles

A house-sized asteroid will shave past our planet on 12 October, far inside the Moon’s orbit but without posing any threat, astronomers have said.

The space rock will zoom by harmlessly at a distance of about 27,300 miles (44,000km ) – an eighth of the distance from the Earth to the Moon, according to the European Space Agency. It is outside the roughly 36,000km orbit of geostationary satellites.

“It’s damn close,” said Rolf Densing, who heads the European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany. “The farthest satellites are 36,000 kilometres out, so this is indeed a close miss.”

For researchers the near miss will provide a rare chance to test Earth’s “planetary defence” systems – which at this point are focused on early warning rather than active asteroid deflection.

Oh yeah no biggie! Just a goddamn asteroid the size of a house, currently going nine miles per SECOND is going to race past planet Earth for what they’re calling a “close miss.” Explain to me this NASA…how the fuck does an asteroid just pop up out of nowhere? It’s a goddamn asteroid for christ’s sake! You know, the things we usually call planet killers? (at least in every movie I’ve seen). Maybe keep on an eye on those sort of things? Now would this specific asteroid have wiped out all life on Earth as we know it? No, they said it would’ve caused similar damage as the one in 2013 did…

In 2013 a meteoroid of about 20m exploded in the atmosphere over the city of Chelyabinsk in central Russia with the kinetic energy of about 30 Hiroshima atom bombs. The resulting shockwave blew out the windows of nearly 5,000 buildings and injured more than 1,200 people. It caught everyone unaware.

Now that’s not catastrophic, but if I’m in the target area of one of those I’m not going to be in the best mood. We have satellites out further into space than where this bad boy popped up, so that’s not the best look for the nerds in charge of this shit. I just picture one guy who was supposed to be monitoring that area of space coming into work today and being confronted by his boss about this.

NASA Director: “Hey uhhh Steve, so did you notice the asteroid coming at Earth that’s gonna miss us by an inch?”

Steve:

All jokes aside, it’s only a matter of time before one of these asteroids comes out of nowhere and it’s too late to stop it from destroying Earth. You always hear how long overdue it’s been since the last planet killer struck Earth and killed everything alive. They got our hopes up in 2012, but when THE ONE finally comes along, we definitely won’t find out about it until like a month before. You think the government would scare us and create a mass panic saying “oh yeah we’re all going to die in a year.” NOPE. It’s going to be sudden and that final month on Earth with nothing to lose is going to be insane. Hell, I might even get laid.

Probably not.
