Parts Of Florida Have Banned Homework For Elementary Schools

(Source)Elementary school students in one Florida school district are going to find a welcome new – but controversial – policy when they return to school for the 2017-18 school year next month: no traditional homework. They are being asked to do one thing to help them academically: Read for 20 minutes a minute a night. Heidi Maier, the new superintendent of the 42,000-student Marion County public school district in Florida, said in an interview that she made the decision based on solid research about what works best in improving academic achievement in students.

As a not smart kid I’m decidedly anti-homework, have been forever and will be until the day I die. Elementary school homework is dumb as hell. I’m seven years old and have to do two hours of homework because a teacher didn’t feel like actually teaching while she had me in a classroom from 7 AM until 3 PM? How ’bout fuck you? I want to go pop wheelies on my Mongoose and throw rocks through windows of abandoned buildings and play Sonic on Sega, not study. I’m a child, not an adult working on their thesis. Addition really isn’t that difficult, teach it to kids during school hours then let them go be kids. You guys are the professionals, after all, it’s up to you to teach the kids how to do shit, it’s not up to dad after he just came home from a long day and just wants to have a beer.

But, as anti-homework as I am, I don’t know if Florida is really the state to be leading the charge on this one? I mean… you guys are Florida. You’re the ones in the paper for getting killed doing the dumbest shit alive every day. You’re the ones with crazy stories each news cycle. Perhaps it would make more sense for another state to bear the responsibility of promoting a no homework for pre-pubescent kids agenda? Just seems like this would be more acceptable if the smart people were the ones who came up with the idea. Florida leading the charge against homework is akin to the kid in class who eats glue getting his worksheet, wiping his ass with it, and screaming “FUCK AUTHORITY!” The kids in class will cheer, but then they’re gonna go home and do their work because they do not want to end up like that kid.
