Wake Up With Freddy Sanchez Going 6-For-6 Against The Cubs (2009)
Before there was Travis Shaw for Tyler Thornburg, there was Freddy Sanchez for Jeff Suppan. The package was bigger than that, but those were the two main pieces. While there’s still time for Thornburg to prove his value to the Boston Red Sox, it’s too late for the Sanchez-Suppan swap. The Red Sox flipped the 25-year-old infielder to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the veteran starter at the 2003 trade deadline. Suppan, in his second stint with Boston, posted an ERA of 5.57 in 10 starts and one relief appearance, while Sanchez went on to play six years in Pittsburgh, including winning a batting title in 2006 when he hit .344 and finished in the top 20 for National League MVP. He also won a World Series with the San Francisco Giants in 2010. Sanchez went on to become a career .297 hitter in 10 big league seasons, while Suppan’s biggest contribution to the Red Sox was getting thrown out at third base by David Ortiz in the 2004 World Series.
