No Surprise Here. Johnny Gaudreau Wants To Play For The Flyers

Johnny Gaudreau represents everything that Philadelphia stands for. He’s a little guy who has been counted out his entire life. If you listened to him on Spittin Chiclets the other week, you heard him tell his story about how he didn’t even think he’d be drafted. But he got snagged in the 4th round, played a few seasons at BC, won the Hobey Baker, has been an All-Star in all 3 of his NHL seasons so far, won the Lady Byng Trophy this year, got himself a $6.75 million contract, and now rides around on horses while wearing Yeezy’s. Not bad for a kid from South Jersey who was drafted behind guys like Joachim Nermark, Josiah Didier and Travis Ewanyk. If you’ve never heard of those guys before, that’s the point.

So anyway, Johnny has a charity golf tournament coming up next week back in South Jersey so he hopped on 94.1 WIP this morning to talk about it. And that’s where the conversation of him playing in an Orange sweater came up.

WIP – Johnny Gaudreau, aka Johnny Hockey, grew up a Flyers fan and would like to play in Philly again, someday.

“Yeah it’d be sweet,” Gaudreau told the 94WIP Morning Show when asked about potentially playing for the Flyers. “I’ve got a ton of family here, all my friends — I actually have a wedding this week here in South Jersey. All my friends come back here, all my good friends, and kids that I’ve played with my whole life are from South Jersey. So, it would be sweet to play here some day. You know you never know in sports, but it’s a lot of support back here in South Jersey and the Philly area.”

The Flames have a pretty decent thing going right now with their forward core of Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk and Bennett. Picking up Mike Smith and Travis Hamonic this summer shows they’re all in to make a push for the next few seasons. Johnny’s locked in through 2021-22 so it’s not like they’ll be looking to move him any time soon. But let’s just say the next couple of seasons don’t go according to plan. Let’s say you give up a 2018 1st round pick, a 2018 2nd round pick and a condition 2019 2nd round pick for Hamonic and you still get worked by Connor McDavid & Co. in the first round for 2-3 years? You might need to change it up a bit. And who is a team that is in need of a flashy, scoring winger and has plenty of talent in the prospect pool and draft picks to deal away?

Just imagine the scene when Johnny Hockey brings the Stanley Cup with him to Sea Isle after winning with the Flyers and everybody gets to drink 302’s out of it. Hope you didn’t have to stand up anytime soon.
