Kirk Cousins Went On Grant And Danny And Said It's Not About The Money, It's About The Right Situation

You know what’s funny? Dan Snyder owns ESPN 980 in DC. He owns the sports talk station, he gets to push the narrative on the station, and the most important player in DC and the starting QB of the Washington Redskins does a weekly spot on 106.7 The Fan. When Cousins started doing his weekly segments, he was the backup to RG3. The Fan believed in him. 980 did not. So now that Kirk is the biggest name in the NFL today, the leading story on every sports show, he did an hour with Grant and Danny. And it was great.

For starters, Kirk took the high road. He always takes the high road, but today he put on a master high road class. While the Skins took shots at him yesterday, Cousins was poised, well spoken, and didn’t take a single low blow or backhanded shot at the franchise.

And while he said all the right things because that’s what he does, a few things did stand out. 1) he made claims that it was never about the money.

Obviously it’s not not about the money, because duh, everyone wants to get paid, but he made it seem it’s more about the right situation than the right amount of money. I don’t know what world a team without a GM and a team that lets Bruce Allen make decisions is the right situation, but he assured everyone the Skins are still in play, he just needed more time to decide where he wants to be. Meaning he wants to test free agency.

I mean yeah, it does make sense. Why should he rush into signing here when he can make a shit ton guaranteed, play out this season, and then re-evaluate his options next year? Of course it’s tricky because he’s once again betting on himself, but he’s a professional football player at the highest level, why shouldn’t he? Of course anyone in his situation would prefer stability, but shit, Mike Glennon is making 8 billion dollars guaranteed, I don’t think Kirk is too worried about getting paid.

So what will happen? Kirk will play out the year, and then we will have a very fun offseason of “where in the world will Kirk play next?” He’s saying all the right things currently:

But the reality is this:

I actually don’t doubt Kirk wants to play out his career, or at least the prime of it, in one place. But with how he’s been rag dolled by the organization, it doesn’t look probable.

Unless……

Oh. Hell. Yes. 3 straight years under the tag will give him over 78 million dollars guaranteed over 3 seasons, the most ever in NFL history. And to think the Skins could have signed him long term 2 seasons ago at like 15 mil/season. I’m here for it. Give him the 3rd straight tag. Give him the 34.4 million. Nothing would be better than that.
