Rick Morrissey Continues To Personify Old Crotchety Sports Newsmen With His Recent "Baseball Isn't Exactly Taxing" Column
You know what, I’m kind of jealous of Rick Morrissey. Yeah I said it. Not for the reasons that would make any sense. I’m not jealous of his access to the clubhouse or featured spot in a dying industry. I’m jealous that he’s able to easily write things that piss people off time and time again. It’s a gift. His recent article that has the internet upset is above. The Cubs don’t need rest because Baseball isn’t that taxing. It’s a beauty. It goes on to list how hard the NHL, NBA, and NFL are compared to baseball, something I don’t think anyone totally disagrees with but is absurd when framed under the premise that rest in baseball isn’t needed. He also talks about the 4.5 month offseason, something we all would sign up for, which I wholly admit, you know if I could hit a round ball going 95 mph 30% of the time (minor detail that got missed). And this is Rick Morrissey. Missing larger points to piss people off with the weirdest little gripes. The same guy that a few months ago said MLB has a selfie problem. No I’m not joking, that’s a real fucking article.
You know it’s a good article when he has to type out that he’s in’t the old man yelling at you to get off his lawn, and then sort of admits he is. What better way to get click than put America’s Past Time and pit against those damn selfie millennials.
Or the time he went in on the Cubs Mime and called off the World Series….In March
Oh the Cubs won the World Series that year, the first time in 108 years, not sure if you heard. Rick Morrissey would have been right 107 other times except for last year, like I said, it’s a gift.
He’s done the age old “look how much it costs to go to a ballgame” column.
A rite of passage for every columnist that ends up hating the sports they cover.
He even did the “start Kris Bryant on opening day 2015 instead of controlling him for another year” thing that was universally agreed upon as the dumbest argument of all time. It’s an art.
So no, I’m not going to let a Rick Morrissey article bother me. Instead I’m going to tip my hat to him. A true innovator in his field. The ability to turn your own stupidity into widespread anger is a special X-Men type skill that every old sportswriter dreams of and Rick has it in spades. Legend of the game.
PS
Big time throwback but I remember back in 2003 when Rick Morrissey thought Javy Lopez was the solution at Catcher for the Cubs. Javy Lopez who was a 32 year old Catcher strangely coming off a season where he hit a career high FORTY THREE Home Runs. Not weird at all. That’s the guy you want to sign to a multi year deal.
