Jameson Taillon Makes His Return To The Mound Five Weeks To The Day He Had Cancer Surgery, Throws Five Shutout Innings

You want a great story? Back on May 8, Jameson Taillon underwent surgery for testicular cancer, got back on a mound within two weeks to prepare for his return to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ rotation, was activated from the disabled list three weeks later and was toeing a major league rubber exactly five weeks to the day that he had his cancer surgery.

Not only did he come back, he threw five shutout innings with five strikeouts and got the win against the first-place Colorado Rockies, who also lead the National League in runs scored. Keep in mind, Taillon only threw 82 pitches last night, as Pittsburgh will gradually be ramping him back up to the 100-pitch mark, which makes his performance against the Rockies all the more impressive. If this isn’t the story of the year in baseball so far, then I’m not sure what is.
