Could Ryan Getzlaf Be The First Bald Conn Smythe Winner The World Has Ever Seen?

Anaheim Ducks v Edmonton Oilers - Game Four

I’m a firm believer in “look good, feel good, play good”. But just like everything else in life, there are always outliers. So while the majority of great hockey players were blessed with luscious locks and beautiful flow, some baldies have been able to find some success in the league as well. When you think of all the great bald headed hockey players in history, you have the guys that were kinda bald but not fully bald like Bobby Hull and Al Iafrate. You have your guys who were bald and led their team to Stanley Cup Championships but weren’t bald when they won their Conn Smythe trophy like Mark Messier and JS Giguere. And then there’s Ryan Getzlaf, who has an opportunity to do something that I don’t think anybody in the history of the game has ever done.

For those of you who haven’t been keeping track, Getzlaf had 5 points in the Ducks’ 4-game sweep of the Flames in the 1st round. And he currently has 8 points in 4 games against the Oilers. The leaders in the clubhouse right now for the Conn Smythe have to be Fleury, Rinne, Pageau and Getzlaf. Especially after grabbing 4 points in the Ducks’ 4-3 overtime win. Guy was tossin’ the bisky in the basky.

And dishing the apple for the overtime game winner.

2 goals, 2 assists, and now the series goes back to Anaheim tied 2-2. That’s 38 points in his last 25 games. Getzlaf is playing his best hockey when it matters the most. He’s like the anti-Ovi.

Obviously the Ducks have to make it to the Stanley Cup Final for him to even have a shot of winning the Conn Smythe. They still have to get 2 more wins against the Oilers. After that they’ll have to take down Nashville who has only lost 1 game so far these playoffs. Anaheim has been known to choke down the stretch. Especially when it comes down to elimination games, specifically game 7’s. But that was Bruce Boudreau’s Anaheim Ducks. They’ve got that other idiot Randy Carlyle back in charge now and it’s an idiot match made in heaven. If everything continues to go according to plan for the Ducks, we’ll witness hockey history being made right in front of our eyes as Ryan Getzlaf becomes the first bald guy to win the Conn Smythe in the history of forever.
