Edgar Renteria will probably never be looked at as one of the great shortstops of his generation. Mostly because he wasn’t one of the great shortstops of his generation, but also because he played during the same era as guys like Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Nomar Garciaparra. He didn’t belong in that tier, but I think it’s fair to say that he belonged in the tier right below them for the bulk of his career.
In his second year in the majors, he won a World Series with the Marlins, which we’ll always remember for his walk-off base hit in Game 7. And then in his second to last season, he won another World Series with the Giants, earning World Series MVP honors in 2010. Weird that he was out of the game just a year later at the age of 34.
