On Episode 86 of the Section 10 Podcast, the Brian Bannister episode, we’ve got former Oakland A’s pitcher and now former ESPN baseball analyst, Dallas Braden. Before we get into the interview, we discuss a couple of topics like Yankee fans acting like their team being good is a big surprise when many people projected them to be at or above .500, and how great the atmosphere was at Fenway for the Cubs weekend series.

We open the Dallas Braden interview with how dope his home setup is, but then we get into his story of being drafted twice and his improbable journey to the majors after being a 24th round draft pick, how he was a sports psychology major, his learning curve in the majors after a great debut and a rocky second start, the story behind his perfect game and the significance of it being on Mother’s Day, the “Get off my mound” incident with A-Rod, the multiple surgeries that he had after that 2010 season and how he literally could not continue his playing career.

We asked him if it’s “play catch” or “have a catch”, his transition from player to analyst, how soon ESPN came calling after he announced his retirement, how he learned the job on the fly with no broadcasting experience, his thoughts on the ESPN layoffs, how it was explained to him by ESPN, his thoughts on pitching against players who he suspected were taking PEDs, and then he gave us a detailed explanation of what happens inside a clubhouse and on a team after someone gets plunked, and also broke down the process of getting payback on the other team. We concluded the interview by asking him to give us his best Nomar Garicparra story, as the two were teammates in 2009. He did not disappoint.
