Did Trump Say Something Really Stupid About Andrew Jackson Or Nah?

Trump’s getting slammed right now for these Andrew Jackson comments. Mentioning in an interview how angry Jackson was with what he saw in the Civil War even though Jackson died 16 years before the Civil War began. On the surface it looks bad — a sitting President referencing how an important American historical figure felt about a Civil War that he was dead for.

But is that really what’s going on? Our pal Clay Travis chimed in.

And he and Tapper got into it from there.

Everybody’s favorite Keith Olbermann obviously had to jump in.

Now, I like Jake Tapper and don’t like anyone else in this exchange so it’s a little tricky, but I do think there’s something to the theory that Trump is so inarticulate he could mean anything here. And that line “had Andrew Jackson been a little bit later you wouldn’t have had the Civil War” lends strong credibility to the argument that he knows what Jackson was and wasn’t alive for.

Yes, he could absolutely be wrong and thought Andrew Jackson was around for the Civil War… but he also could absolutely be right and just have been very far off in articulating it. Amazingly, neither would surprise me.

Gun to my head, I actually think what Trump was saying was correct but it’s close. Very close.
