New York Yankees Baseball: Week Four (The Comeback Kids)

Last Week: 3-3 Some ups, some downs. Mostly just Aaron Judge homers.

As we closed out the month of April, the Yankees traveled up north to Fenway, followed by a home series against the O’s. Some of the early season haters have pointed to a tissue paper soft opening schedule as the reason New York has absolutely dominated the first month of baseball. Well, back to back series against the toast of the AL East sure would be a true test to see how good these guys really are. A 3-3 split would have been completely fine in my book, but once again we got spoiled. This team is very, very special. Lets dive in folks..

The Comeback
On Friday night we all witnessed something truly special. New York fell behind big time 9-1 after a very bad CC Sabathia outing. Judge stepped to the dish in the bottom of the sixth and continued to amaze us.

At the time, it was the hardest hit home run in the StatCast era. Literally insane. Schoop extended the O’s lead in the next frame to make it 11-4 in the 7th, it just wasn’t our night…right?

Ellsbury stepped to the plate with the bases juiced, sitting on 99 career homers.

How about your first career grand slam as your 100th homer? Unreal, it cut deep into the O’s seven run lead. This was all of a sudden a ball game again. After an Ellsbury fielder’s choice Starlin Castro batted as the game’s tying run with one out and a man on. What happened next was the moment of the season thus far.

Off one leg, Adrian Beltre style, Castro completed the comeback, and one inning later Matt Holliday said good night

Absolutely INSANE comeback. INSANE. The comeback kids with the moment of the season thus far. These guys are legit, and you better start believing if you aren’t already on this train.

Binder Joe

As I was making my way back from a mini weekend vacation I was trying to follow yet another ninth inning comeback. After Darren O’Day (this guy has been pitching for no less than 20 years) loaded the bases trying to close out the game, Didi Gregorious (welcome back!) came through with a base hit up the middle.

I started screaming as I was walking the streets of New York to my bus. God Bless the Fox Sports Go App for streaming every Yankee game on YES this year (pro tip). As exciting as all this was, Binder Joe was ready to toy with all of our minds. This motherfucker…

So how does Binder Joe top himself this time? He decides to preserve Bryan Mitchell’s arm in the game by throwing him at first base.

With Greg Bird getting the day off he was by default on the bench ready to go. Greg Bird, the usual starting first baseman, was available to play baseball and we threw out our middle reliever Bryan Mitchell to play a major league fielding position.

So how did this adventure go you might ask?

This allowed Castillo another chance at the plate in which he connected on a base hit to center field. All because Joe Girardi put a middle reliever at first base in a real life baseball game.

Luckily, Mitchell regained his gold glove skills and made a catch on a foul out soon after. It’s amazing how the baseball finds you in spots like these. Anyways, Mitchell came back in to pitch and gave up three runs which led to the O’s taking the final game of the series 7-4. I pray to God that Girardi doesn’t pull this shit again because if he does I’ll have a nervous breakdown.

Welcome Back Didi!

As I briefly mentioned above, Didi Gregorious returned from the DL to make his season debut. In just three games so far, he’s hitting .467 (all three multi-hit games) with four RBIs including his clutch two run single yesterday. Ronny Torreyes was AWESOME filling in for Didi this past month and he’ll continue to be a great weapon off the bench for speed or spelling a middle infielder who need a rest. Didi’s return makes this lineup that much more dangerous.

Oh, by the way SEE YAAA PETE KOZMAAAAAA!!!!!

Hot Seat: Greg Bird

It’s pretty obvious Girardi has lost all confidence in Greg Bird and has come to the conclusion a middle reliever is more worth his while than throwing Bird out there. All kidding aside, the Bird Man’s batting average sits at .107 with one homer and three RBIs. I’m starting to lose my patience, but I’m still keeping a level head. Thank god the rest of the lineup is making Bird’s atrocious opening month an after thought.

Overrated Opposing Pitcher Of The Week:

Chris Sale I’m so scared!!! Ever hear of Masahiro Tanka bro? When you throw a 97 pitch three hit complete game shut out come talk to me.

Just kidding Sale is one of the more disgusting pitchers I’ve ever seen and it’s wild the Yanks got three runs off of him. That might be his season high all year. It’s going to suck facing this guy throughout the season.

Severino Is Must Watch

Every start for now on is must watch with this guy. He’s gained control of his electric fastball, along with his devastating slider. Now with only four walks to go with 33 strikeouts in 27 IP this year, Sevy can be relied upon to give us seven innings every time out. Seven innings out of a Yankees starter is basically game over with how the pen has and will continue to pitch. Tonight he gets the ball against the Jays with Marco Estrada on the hill for Toronto, I’m not expecting a lot of runs from either team.

Chase Headley Error Of the Week

Back to back days with errors. He’s back!!

Gleyber Is Coming

What’s Coming Up?

GARY IS COMING

Oh yeah, this whole month of April where New York led the AL in run differential and is currently tied for first in the East was done without our best player. Adding Gary to this lineup is borderline unfair. Gary is coming back Friday it looks like and he’s coming with a vengeance. You’re going to tell him he’s been replaced as everyone’s favorite Yankee? Buckle up, we’re about to see a show.

A three game home set with the Jays starts tonight and then New York travels to Wrigley Field for a weekend set with the Cubbies. As of now we’re looking at Severino against Lester on Sunday Night Baseball. That’s going to be AWESOME.
