Anthony Joshua Knocking Out Wladimir Klitschko To Unify The Heavyweight Titles Is An Awesome Boxing Moment
UFC and mixed martial arts get more of the spotlight these days and are a billion times healthier as a sport. And boxing isn’t the cultural phenomenon it once was outside of a Mayweather fight (and even then not so much lately). But there’s something amazing seeing a boxing knockout like this in front of a fighter’s home country going absolutely ape shit, in this case with Anthony Joshua winning in-front of a British record 90,000 people. I don’t know how you watch that video and don’t get goosebumps, it’s one of those sports feelings that only two guys competing in a modern day gladiator can provide. And now Joshua looks like one of the biggest stars in sports after knocking off Wladimir Klitschko, who lost in his last fight but previously held down the heavyweight division with a boring iron fist for a decade. There may not be a ton of moments like these left for boxing but seeing Joshua beat the shit out of the probably-not-evil-but-still Russian while his home country goes wild is definitely one to remember.
Anthony Joshua moved to 19-0 with the win and looks like a superstar here but now he’s likely to go against fellow Brit Tyson Fury, who previously beat Klitschko in a less exciting decision and then forfeited the belts due to battling drug and depression-related issues:
^great memeing here. The fight quality with Fury versus Joshua might be meh but England will go NUTS for it. Either way, Anthony Joshua’s a star now with that beating and for now at least heavyweight boxing is fun again. Here’s all his other KOs, not exactly a young Mike Tyson but a VAST improvement on the hug and jab game that the Klitschkos turned the division into:
