UC Berkeley To Teach The Game Of Thrones Language Dothraki This Summer
UC Berkeley announced the class on its website last week, confirming that ‘The Linguistics of Game of Thrones and the Art of Language Invention’ will be taught by the language’s creator, David J. Peterson. The course will run this coming summer for six weeks.
Peterson is an alum of UC Berkeley earning his Masters in Linguistics at UC San Diego in 2005. In 1009, he found himself creating the language of Dothraki for the HBO fantasy series based on extracts from George R.R. Martin’s book series. It now features well over 3,000 words.
Hey Berkeley, I know that you are stuck in your uber-liberal mindset but teaching the Dothraki’s language is actually cultural appropriation which is bad. Stick to sports, Berkeley.
I thought Berkeley and other schools in their ilk were about peace and tranquility. News Flash: the Dothraki are ruthless. They are tattooed warriors (could just be mud. Impossible to know for sure) who don’t even have a word for Thank You in their language which I find to be rude and grateful if we are sitting in the honest tree. Very uncouth behavior. They ride and pillage and care only about war and sex. Sorry for being vulgar but it needed to be said.
As someone who also has terrible tribal tattoos, I look up to the Dothraki. They are my kinda people. After all, their name literally means Riders. I think that’s talkin about sex, folks. Children, cover your eyes. This is a sex scene.
That feelin when you come out of a 6-week summer course learning a useless fictional language but there’s still 4-weeks left of DartySZN
Bonus: still an amazing scene.
