The Yankees Swept The Red Sox Because They Are A Better Team
On Tuesday I wrote that this was an important series. I put it out there that no matter the outcome, a division series is important, no matter the month. My assumption is that the Yankees printed that article out and hung it in the clubhouse, because they took notice. After a rainout on Tuesday, we only got 2 games in. But they were great for the Yankees.
Severino was due for a game that he just stunk. The guy has been pitching great all year and it wouldn’t have shocked anyone if the Red Sox lineup abused him. Instead we got 7 innings with no runs and 6 strikeouts to bring his ERA down to an even 3.00. In fog and rain, Severino was regularly in the high 90s with his fastball and kept batters off balance with his secondary pitches. There was a bit of a scare in the 9th from Chapman that skyrocketed his ERA to 1.23. We might have to send him down to Scranton to make some adjustments. It was a big night for Judge as well, with a home run and a diving catch into the stands, all on his 25th birthday.
Sox fans weren’t worried though because they had their new ace on the hill last night in Chris Sale. There is no way you can say anything bad about Chris Sale as a pitcher and I won’t even try to. However, you must wonder what he’s done as a teammate that the guys in the lineup won’t hit for him. Is he playing country music in the clubhouse? Is he altering guys’ jerseys? Are the Red Sox maybe just a bad team? It’s hard to tell, but between that and Pedroia throwing his own guys under the bus, something is up. The Yankees were able to score 3 on Sale, even though he was dominant at times and struck out 10. But Tanaka simply won that pitchers battle.
At the beginning of the season Tanaka looked lost but has turned things around and is 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA in his last 3 outings. Not all of these outings were as easy as last night either. After really having to tough things out against the Cardinals and White Sox in his last 2 starts, Tanaka has found control of all of his pitches. You see this not only in the final score, but also in the fact that Tanaka allowed no walks after giving up at least 2 in every other start this year.
So, let’s get down to the brass tacks of it all. THIS WAS A SWEEP. The Yankees don’t make the weather forecast and can only play the games put in front of them. The league let them play 2 games, so they won 2 games. No matter what any Red Sox fan wants to say about “It’s only April” or “It was only 2 games”, we came to Fenway and WAXED THAT ASS. Now we sit one game out of first with the Orioles coming to town and it’s time to bring them back to reality.
PS: I went to Tuesday night’s game with Carrabis and instead of drinking beers, he had 2 hot chocolates and asked the server “What’s the candy situation look like?” You can’t win like that.
PPS: We’re so fucking back.
