This ought to go well for Dez Bryant. As a matter of fact, it’s already started, with that first post alone getting 70,000 likes and a 700-post thermonuclear culture war raging in the comments section. It’s fashionable to say you want athletes to speak out more on  issues. It makes you sound serious, concerned and socially aware. But that usually only lasts for as long as it takes an athlete to say something you don’t agree with. Then it immediately becomes “You don’t understand the issues. Shut up and just play ball.” And mark my words, that is coming for Dez Bryant. I mean, advocating for personal responsibility? Accountability? Leading by example? Not promoting victimhood but making positive changes to your circumstances? Not fathering kids with the 14-year-old daughter of your crackhead girlfriend who’s the stepsister to your other kids? Those are some controversial stances, and there will be consequences, I’m sorry to say. Bryant should have just knelt during the National Anthem instead so he’d be considered a hero by all the civil libertarians. This call for living a life of responsibility and accountability is going to cost him.
