McDonald's Is Now Allowing People To Apply For A Job Via Snapchat Filters

Snapchat

News.com.au – The fast-food giant has teamed up with Snapchat to launch a McDonald’s-themed filter for the photo messaging app, with jobseekers invited to try on the uniform and send a 10-second video application.

Launching on today, the “Snaplications” campaign is being billed as a first for both companies. Once the application is reviewed, McDonald’s will send users back to the digital careers hub where they can download an application form.

McDonald’s employs about 106,000 Australians, with 65 per cent under the age of 18. In Australia, Snapchat has more than four million daily users, 82 per cent of whom are young people.

“I’ve learnt a lot about Snapchat recently from my 14-year-old daughter,” said Shaun Ruming, chief operating officer of McDonald’s Australia.

“We think this is actually a world first. Snaplications is basically a Snapchat ‘lens’ that gives users the ability to apply for a job — or at least commence that process — by sending a 10-second snap. We’re the largest employer of youth in the country, so we’re trying to look for new and innovative ways to recruit crew people.”

So on the surface this may sound like a marketing stunt or the downfall of humanity if you’re the type who’s sentimental about such things. But it is a good idea. You need to get fresh meat to flip burgers for you? Why not go where they are and make it as easy as possible? Snapchat and Instagram applications are the future. And honestly I’m very into using Snapchat for any and all practical applications. Not too long ago I was hung out with a girl and had a normal week of conversation with her that was primarily over Snapchat. We got into a fight the next time we hung out because she said it didn’t count as actual talk because it was in the disappearing Snapchat text window. But to me it’s the intent; a text isn’t more valuable in an iMessage and a job application isn’t more valuable because you scrawled something in crayon and applied in-person rather than putting a puppy filter on and talking about your passion for fried apple pies. Two means to the same end that fills everyone with tasty meat (in both situations), I’m all for it.

The one thing I will say…if it’s harrowing when you’re sending a risqué or incriminating Snapchat and worried about accidentally posting it to your Snapchat story, imagine the pressure of doing the same thing and sending it to a potential employer. I’m still in on the idea but maybe let’s keep it solely for youth recruitment at fast food places until we flesh out the “not sending your turgid penis as part of your CV by mistake” part of things. Better safe than sorry.
