The Yankees Blew A 4 Run Lead Tonight And Look Lost

It’s only 4 games into the season, but I think we can all admit this team does not look good. Not everything is bad all the time but as a “team”, they don’t look good. It’s just a bunch of individual pieces that haven’t gelled at all.

Tonight is a prime example because the offense struggled to score in the first when the opportunity for a big inning was there. Instead of several runs, we settled for 1. Then over the next few innings we scored 4 runs on 2 home runs, but left other runners on. Instead of 5 runs tonight, we should’ve scored 8-10 and I’m officially worried about Greg Bird.

Sitting at 1-16 on the season, Bird looks LOST. At the plate he’s swinging through 90 mph meatballs and in the field he can’t catch a ball that isn’t directly at his chest. It’s clear that his lack of success early in the year is in his head and Chris Carter pinch hitting for him in the 9th, even though the situation called for it, probably won’t help. Bird has all the talent in the world, but needs to get out of his own head. The Yankees should get Reggie on a plane ASAP to give him a pep talk.

As much at Bird’s defense could have saved us, Headley wasn’t helping at all. We saw a ball thrown into right, that ended up not hurting us, and another thrown away that open the door for the comeback. Headley has almost as many hits in 4 games as he did in the whole month of April last year, but if you can’t throw the ball, you’re no help.

Severino will get some blame for giving up the Machado home run, and he deserves it, but those are the mistakes you have to expect out of a 4th starter. The real mistake was walking Jones, who can’t hit Severino, but with Machado’s numbers against Luis we all saw this coming. Unfortunately, Giradi didn’t.

It’s early in the season and there will be plenty of chances to rebound, but we need a big start out of Tanaka tomorrow. After a terrible opening day start, we need our ace to act like an ace and stop the bleeding and get our bullpen some rest.

I’ll see you all at Camden Yards tomorrow to turn this season around.
