A New, Different Type Of Embarrassed For Jets Fans Tonight
Saying you’re embarrassed to be a Jets fan isnt really something new. But tonight really is a different type of embarrassment. A special kind. Perhaps, the worst kind.
As I said there’s been plenty of moments over the years where its mortifying to root for this team. 45-3 blowouts. ButtFumbles. Games that are so offensively inept you cheer for first downs like they’re touchdowns. Reaching midfield is like reaching the end zone. The types of games where it feels like youre watching a different sport in comparison to the football that winning franchises play. The stuff that sets the league and the sport back because its such a shitty product.
But tonight is just complete and utter indifference. Flat out dont-give-a-fuck ingoddamdifference. Usually nationally televised games are a nationally televised disaster for the Jets and so leading up to kick off I sit around fretting. Worrying about what could go wrong. Worried about them doing something eternally embarrassing like the Buttfumble. Tonight I couldnt possibly care less. I dont even want to watch. The Colts are a pretty bad team in their own right and could easily lose and I still dont care. Its not even like I can take interest in one of the younger quarterbacks because the team is inexplicably starting Fitz again. Not that I’d ever have hope for Petty or Hackenberg, bit its just another point to hammer home this explanation of disinterest. We’ve got a dead man walking under center, our head coach is clueless, got overpaid vets like Revis blatantly not trying, a couple unhappy malcontents like Wilkerson and Richardson who seem to hate every minute they’re in a Jets uniform. Aside from Quincy Enunwa there is literally nothing else to look foward to during Jets football.
Tickets to tonight’s game are going for like 5 dollars. People are offering tickets left and right and everyone is declining. And I cant even imagine what the ratings will look like in the New York area. Nobody is ever under any illusion that the Jets are going to be a Super Bowl contender but at least when a Sunday or Monday/Thursday rolls around, you’d still be excited for football. More often than not, it took more of a “Oh fuck we might get blown out” nervousness as opposed to true excitement, but there was still SOME emotion to be felt. Not anymore. Not this season. I just dont care even a little bit. And thats coming from a dude who’s a professional when it comes to rooting for bad teams. It takes a real special type of losing for me to completely lose interest. And we’re here. Sad.
