Patrick Reed Is An American Hero As Team USA Takes A 9 1/2 to 6 1/2 Advantage Over Team Europe
What a goddamn day. I’m ready to say that the Ryder Cup is by far my favorite sporting event. Call it hyperbole. Call it recency bias. Call out whatever you want. I couldn’t tell you the last time I’ve had this much fun watching a sporting event. You toss nationalism into just about anything and it up the fun factor by about a billion. The Ryder Cup is like the World Cup in that way. The only difference is I actually care about golf.
Lots of awesome stuff happened today. The day really turned around for Team USA in the last hour or so. As it neared the end it was guaranteed that the remaining three groups were gonna grab at least half points. They went ahead and grabbed all full points after DJ and Koepka fell to Rory and Pieters. Before we move on, Rory is a bad man. A bad bad man. I said it yesterday but if you don’t have love for Rory somewhere in your heart then you don’t actually love golf. Him screaming and celebrating and almost getting into fist fight with American fans is the goddamn best. I root against him every two years but he’s one of my favorites. Hands down. I will not apologize. This event is 100x better with him involved. Anway, JB Holmes and Ryan Moore securing a full point was a fantastic surprise (thanks to the help of Lee Westwood choking realllllllllllllll bad down the stretch with a couple of gimme putts).

The story of day though? You guessed it. Captain America, Patrick Reed. He’s the story of the Ryder Cup so far. It’s not often that guy gets paired with someone like Jordan Spieth and completely outshines them but that’s exactly what Patrick Reed did today. He’s by far been the brightest star of this whole damn thing. Not all that surprising since Reed loves the Ryder Cup more than you love your own mother. But Spieth was just along for the ride today like the rest of us. Reed carded 6 birdies and an eagle all by himself.

He’s an absolute monster. Ever since he came onto the PGA Tour scene we’ve all had a love/hate relationship with Reed. I’m pretty sure he’s a giant asshole but he’s our giant asshole. Especially every two years when we team up against the Europeans. You can’t not love a guy who raises his game on a stage like this. A stage unlike any other, including majors. The crowd feeds off him and he feeds off the crowd. It really is a beautiful thing watching a man operate in an event that is clearly inside his comfort zone. I don’t wanna get too ahead of myself cause there’s still an entire day of singles left but goddamn Patrick Reed has cemented himself as a Ryder Cup legend these first two days. And if there really is a god, we’ll get a Reed vs Rory singles match. Fingers crossed.
