Rutgers hoops has discovered the secret to recruiting: just kind of lie. And god damn do I respect it.

Ray Allen. Shabazz. Rip Hamilton. Three legends of the game.

Just not for Rutgers.

Ok it’s not technically a lie. Not when you read the fine print.

Rutgers will hire University of Connecticut assistant coach Karl Hobbs to be the team’s associate head coach under Steve Pikiell, a source with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media on Thursday.

After played point guard at UConn in the early 1980s, Hobbs became an assistant coach at Boston University before returning to Storrs to be on coach Jim Calhoun’s staff for the Huskies. The Massachusetts native was there from 1993 to 2001 and earned a reputation for his strong recruiting. [NJ]

Putting $1.1 BILLION EARNED in size 95 font next to gigantic pictures of former stars and blasting it out to recruits who I don’t even think were alive to watch 2 of them play college ball – some may call it sneaky, I call it savvy.

Either way, the career earnings of players tied to your new assistant coach has got to be the least sick sick-brag of all time.
