I read all those tweets in the South Park “They took’er jobbbbs” voice, especially the tweets from the #respect and disrespect tag team

Look, I am all for patriotism. Especially during the Olympics. But the people losing their mind about this shit are all wayyyy off base. You would think Gabby went Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf on the anthem and sat her ass down on the podium after just winning a gold medal for her country. Nope. She just didn’t go with the hand over the heart pose, which people apparently think is a big deal. I am going the other way. I think if you put your hand over your heart during the National Anthem, you are being a bit of a try hard.

If you salute the flag as a member or veteran of the military, that’s cool. If you are a civilian wearing a hat, you should take it off your head and put it over your heart. If you are a child or a super America fan, you can put your hand over your heart. And if you are basically everyone else, you simply stand, hold your hands like Gabby did, and be respectful. And of course, bonus points to anyone quietly mouthing the words.

That being said, if you don’t put your hand over your heart during the Pledge of Allegiance, you should be shipped to Siberia and have to live out the rest of your days doing hard labor for Putin. But as long as you are standing and being respectful during the National Anthem, you are cool with me.

Again, Pledge of Allegiance = Hand over heart. National Anthem = Stand up, hats off, and be respectful. Those are the rules, right?
