Reports: Aroldis Chapman Has been Traded For Gleyber Torres

Rumors have been flying around all weekend that Chapman was about to be shipped out of town to and it looks like this may finally be happening with the Cubs. Chapman has been great this year but we gave away a pile of junk for him and with his pending free agency, moving him made the most sense of any possible trade. I’ve heard rumors that he would want to come back as a free agent but at his asking price, if Miller isn’t traded, I’m not sure that happens.

Now none of this is official but I have seen it from a few sources that Gleybar Torres has been pulled from tonight’s, High A game in Myrtle Beach. If you don’t know much about Torres (why would you?) he ranked #15 in Keith Law’s preseason ranking of the top 100 prospects. A 19-year-old SS Torres shows the pop to hit 15 home runs a year at the MLB level. He has a slick glove and strong arm to go with a frame that could keep him as short for the rest of his trip through the minors.

If this trade becomes official, it will make for an interesting situation in the Yankee’s farm system. The team already has a Shortstop of the future in Jorge Mateo at the High A level. Mateo was recently suspended for 2 weeks and as a result missed the Futures Game for demanding a call up to AA, so seeing how he reacts to this deal if it goes through will be interesting.

This isn’t a done deal yet but for the sake of the future of the team, I hope this is the first of many deals to come.
