NY Post — A group calling itself “The Brazil Caliphate” has pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the self-proclaimed leader of the Islamic State, sparking fresh concerns about the nation’s ability to safeguard the upcoming Summer Olympics.
In the July 17 pledge, “Ansar al-Khilafah Brazil” posted to its Telegram channel an allegiance to al-Baghdadi, the “Emir of the Believers, the Caliph of the Muslims,” and promised to fully obey him in establishing “the religion of Allah” against “the enemy.”
At this point, if you’ve already bought your tickets, booked your rooms, and decided to go to Brazil for the Olympics, you’re going to Brazil for the Olympics. Nothing is stopping you. Mutant insects. Real-life Call Of Duty on the freeway. Super bacteria dominating the water. Murderous gangs waiting when you type in the wrong Waze address. Clearly none of this has mattered to you and nothing will. If you’ve decided to go, you’re going.
So now Brazil has just become like a bad shit landfill, right? We’re all pretty immune to new stories of bad things in Brazil. Doesn’t affect us anymore. We’re all in agreement that we’ve reached the point of no return on Brazil? That it’s now just a melting pot of bad stuff? Good, because the local terror group pledging allegiance to ISIS and ISIS’ spokesman chirping French and Brazilian security can never really be a good thing:
Brazilian and French law enforcement have held joint training and drills in recent years, with the countries hosting events such as the World Cup, Euro 2016 and the upcoming Olympics.
First off, fuck that guy. Second, this pledge is just a simple scare tactic. Hopping on the internet and saying “We’re with ISIS!” doesn’t make these guys any more dangerous. It doesn’t automatically give them the knowledge and resources to pull off attacks they previously could not pull off. They do this simply to make people say, “ISIS is in Brazil.”
And fortunately, as I’ve already detailed, that shouldn’t matter to anyone going to Brazil. If you are going to the Olympics you have already declared that you value your life and your long-term health very little. So good luck Brazilian ISIS trying to scare a bunch of people that don’t care about themselves. Maybe take a couple weeks off, hit the beach, and get back to work when all the self-loathing tourists are gone.
Update: Turns out they are not taking time off.
