Wake Up With Mark McGwire In The 1999 Home Run Derby
Tonight’s the Home Run Derby, so to get in the mood, I present to you, arguably the greatest Home Run Derby performance of all-time. Just like nobody remembers who won the 2008 Home Run Derby (Justin Morneau) when Josh Hamilton hit 28 home runs in the first round — also in the conversation for best Home Run Derby performance of all-time — people forget that Ken Griffey Jr. won the 1999 Home Run Derby, because fans remember that derby for Mark McGwire’s performance. In the heart of the Steroid Era, Big Mac launched 13 of the longest home runs that we’ve ever seen hit at Fenway Park in the first round. Although he didn’t win, he did remind us of the fact that baseball was at its best when players were juiced out of their minds.
PS – Love Chris Berman saying, “Does this have enough juice to find the net?” on one of his pop-ups that didn’t have enough to get out.
