Welp I Have Already Convinced Myself That Russell Westbrook Will Be Signing With The Knicks Next Year

I saw this little nugget go out earlier today and I tried to ignore it. I tried to suppress my feelings. And then I did a Google search of Russell Westbrook wearing a Knicks jersey. And things predictably got messy.

I feel like a hooker that just broke her one rule of not kissing on the mouth. Knicks fans should never get excited about a player’s “interest” in the team, the city, or one of the players/coaches. But fuck it, why not us? We are in the shitty East. No free agent is going to want to face the Warriors before the Finals in the coming years, let alone the T’Wolves if/when they put it together under Thibs, plus Pop doing Pop things in San Antonio. I know Westbrook is from Los Angeles, played at UCLA, and would probably look fantastic in yellow and purple on what could become an up and coming Lakers team (especially with Mozzy manning the pivot). But let me dream here for a minute.

1. Obviously we always hear about how free agents want to come to a big city like New York and it almost never happens. I mean Melo wanted to come here so badly he forced a trade that we finally are no longer being haunted for after this draft ended. But after years in OKC, wouldn’t Russ want to come somewhere and be an even bigger star than he has been during his career? You can’t tell me he dresses like an asshole just because he thinks it’s fun. Why can’t New York being the home of fashion be a huge advantage to the Knicks for once (Is New York the home of fashion? I mean we have Fashion Week, are home to a ton of models, and Zoolander took place here, right?)

2. Once Derrick Rose’s contract ends after this season, a lot of money and a starting point guard position opens up in The Mecca. Could this have been Phil’s plan all along? Yeahhhh, probably not. But if so, it’s all goink according to plan.

3. Back to the Porzingis thing. Obviously we all fell in love with him last year and this all hinges on him showing even more improvement this year. But who wouldn’t want to play with a 7’3″ unicorn that was truly made for today’s NBA? If the Knicks actually can develop a superstar they drafted for the first time since Patrick Ewing, it makes Madison Square Garden soooooo much more attractive despite having one of the, if not THE worst owner in all of sports running everything.

Sure in a perfect world Kevin Durant would have re-signed with the Thunder before both him and Westbrook left after another failed title run. Now teams will be trying to trade for Westbrook so the Thunder don’t end up completely empty-handed like they did once Durant left while being able to offer Westbrook more money than other teams can. But as Knicks fans know all too well, this is not a perfect world. Hence why I am still talking myself into ridiculous scenarios where a superstar would sign with the Knicks during his prime. But thank you for humoring me anyway.

Now hit the unofficial song of Knicks fans around the world:

God I am a fucking idiot.
