The Independent — France has launched an official terrorism app, which will inform people of any attacks during Euro 2016.
The new service is intended to address many of the problems that came in the aftermath of the attacks in Paris in November. It will allow people to get information if phone networks are down, for instance, and it will also allow authorities to broadcast verified information and avoid misreporting.
Fears about terrorist attacks on Euro 2016 have grown in the lead-up to the beginning of the tournament. The Home Office warned travellers that there was a “high threat from terrorism” and that people should be vigilant, and a number of other agencies including the US State Department has suggested that people heading to the tournament might be in danger.
Great idea. Impossible to forget what things were like the in aftermath of the Marathon bombing. False reports left and right. Phone service nonexistent. No one had any clue where to get information or which information was accurate. Anything you read could lead you to safety or right into harm’s way. This app seeks to eliminate that clutter, providing accurate, concise, crucial information as quickly as possible. Again, fantastic idea.
A Euro 2016 attack is a massive fear. The event is gigantic. The only thing Europeans love more than signing their entire paychecks over to the government is soccer. The terrorists know that. The open border policy in Europe makes it incredibly easy for these cowards to hop from one country to another. With Charlie Hebdo and the November 13th attacks, we’ve seen how vulnerable France is. We don’t want a world where a terrorism app is necessary, but reality is reality and if something does happen this definitely will help.
