If this doesnt sum up the Red Sox and their fans this season, I dont know what does. All year long I’ve just been getting flat out ridiculous “trade proposals” from Red Sox fans. “We’ll give you Hanley and Napoli for deGrom!” “Mookie and Pedroia for Harvey!” Just constant nonsense.
Now I’m not saying Xander Bogaerts is nonsense. But this “consideration” for a “one time” phenom is laughable. Bob Ryan acting like he wouldnt even entertain the idea of trading for MATT HARVEY is preposterous. After a pseudo-rough patch for Harvey, he’s got a 1.45 ERA in his last 10 starts. He’s currently on a 22.2 inning scoreless streak where he hasnt walked a batter. The dude is BACK. Any concerns over his Tommy John recovery have been completely laid to rest. That “one time” phenom shit is a joke. The phenom is back and he’s not going anywhere. And while all the talk this year has been about which of the Mets starters is the true ace, when the dust finally settles, its going to be Matt Harvey. He is that dude. And of course a 22 year old short stop batting .315 is nothing to turn your nose up at, a one for one swap for Harvey as he returns to complete and total dominance on the mound is not even a consideration.
PS – That dude saying he’d rather send Mookie Betts for Harvey cracked me up. Oh really? Would you rather that? No fucking kidding man.
Freezing cold take here. Ice ice cold. Cooler than a polar bears toenails. At least for the moment. So here I am, taking my lumps. Standing in front of the firing squad. Taking my Walk of Shame like Cersei to atone. Let me have it.
But let me just say this – at the time there was a lot of Red Sox fans who agreed with me it was silly. It was a hypothetical that was never on the table because it wasnt an option from the Mets point of view, not Boston’s. But some Sox fans came over the top and said they’d need Harvey plus prospects to even consider giving up one of them, and to those guys I tip my cap. And of course lets not forget 3 major things – 1) Matt Harvey was dialed in last year despite all the innings limit garbage, and what he did in the playoffs was a huge part of a World Series run. 2) It was a World Series the Mets should have won had they not booted the ball around the field like Little Leaguers. SIX goddam errors in 5 games including Murphy’s Buckner Moment, Duda’s throw and Cespedes kicking the ball around like it was a soccer pitch. If they make those plays the Mets have a World Series flag flying and it doesnt matter how bad Matt Harvey has been this year and how good Mookie and X are. So if you ask me to make that trade in 2015 again, I still say no given how close they came to finally getting back to the promised land. And 3) Lets not act like Matt Harvey is completely done here. Hes got a LONG way to go to get back to where he was, and in the end if this year ends up like complete dogshit, its a huge blow for the Mets who probably only have him for a couple more years. But judging a dude’s total value after a season of pitching the most innings after TJ surgery is silly. Maybe he’s never the same young phenom he was but he certainly aint gonna be this version of himself forever. Nor do I think Mookie Betts is actually gonna hit 35 HRs and drive in 150.
But yea, Id say at the moment it would be pretty nice to have X at short if this hypothetical ever was a reality. I guess that would be agreeable.
