(Billboard) — Taylor Swift added two more honors — the first-ever Taylor Swift Award and Pop Songwriter of the Year — to her crowded shelf of industry accolades at the 64th annual BMI Pop Awards last evening (May 10). Held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., the ceremony honored the writers and publishers of the most-performed pop songs during the past year.
And the winner of this year’s Taylor Swift award, in recognition of her artistic talent and influence, isssss…..
No one’s better than you, babe! Some cynics may say that this is an obvious sham and some sort of gross self-congratulations, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Mr. Seinfeld wore his fancy #1 Dad shirt and rubbed it in Mandelbaum’s face or since Michael Scott got himself a World’s Best Boss mug at Spencer’s. But I ask you, who better to win the Taylor Swift award than Taylor Swift? Who else captures her essence and beauty? Who else has her artistic talent and influence? No one, that’s who. Only Taylor Swift has the proper credentials to win the Taylor Swift award so, if you ask me, the BMI got this one right. Just like how they got it right in giving her 2016 awards for an album and songs that came out in 2014.
