New Tom Clancy Video Game Pays Homage To One Of Chris Farley's SNL Characters
Gamespot- Easter eggs in The Division continue to be discovered in the weeks since its release. The latest, while small, is a pretty clear reference to one of the most iconic Saturday Night Live characters played by the late Chris Farley. The secret is hiding in one of the game’s Echoes, the holographic reconstructions of past events that you’re able to discover around New York. As shown in the screenshot above (shared on Reddit by user Awes10), one of the people whose background you can examine in an Echo is listed as someone who “lives in a van down by the river.” He’s also unemployed. That’s an obvious tip of the hat to Matt Foley, a character played by Farley on SNL. Brought in as a motivational speaker to turn around the life of two kids, Foley proceeds to craft one of the most memorable characters the show has ever seen.
So I guess this is the new video game that’s hot on the streets? Tom Clancy’s The Division? I’m so removed from that world that I’m actually embarrassed. Video games used to be my life. My teenage years coincided with the explosion of online gaming and I took to it like a fat kid takes to cake. All day every day. Mostly Call of Duty and Halo. Just ripping around maps, sticking plasma grenades to people and avoiding any and all vaginas within a 500 mile radius. Those were the goddamn days, my friends. The best days. Now all I do is sit on my couch, refresh Twitter 45,000 times a day and continue to avoid any and all vaginas. It was a lot more fun shooting Steve from Long Island in the face with an MP40. Anyyyyyyyyway. Any game that pays homage to the great Chris Farley is cool with me. Shouts to them. I don’t understand what part of the video game this is but I know I would’ve lost my shit had I been playing. Well done.
This is probably my favorite Farley SNL sketch ever. There are a lot of good ones but this is the most well known. It’s also the most quotable which makes it that much better. If you and your friends don’t toss around Chris Farley SNL quotes on the regular then you need better friends. “Hey dad, I can’t see real good, is that Bill Shakespeare over there?” still makes me laugh out loud. RIP to the GOAT.
