Ho hum. Another year, another championship for Boston. Our girl Denna Laing‘s squad, the Boston Pride, took home the inaugural Isobel Cup in front of a packed house down in Jersey tonight with a 2 game sweep of the Buffalo Beauts. That’s, what, our 1,000th championship in the last 15 years or so? Meanwhile Buffalo is getting headlines like this written for them pre-game:
Poor Buffalo. That sentence makes sense at any time and in any place, yet I had to say it again after reading that headline. Poor fucking Buffalo.
Huge congrats to the Pride girls, though, and talk about a whirlwind season. From the highs of being part of the first (probably?) women’s professional hockey league, to the lows of losing your teammate in a horrible accident at the Winter Classic, then back up to being world champs. Has to be damn near impossible playing through a loss like that but here they are. Got the job done because they got the memo: you have Boston on the front of the jersey? You win championships. Those are the rules.
Little worried about how this is going to affect my relationship with Hilary Knight, however. Thought we were going to have a little long distance thing going but you know how these athletes are, they make you promises and tell you sweet nothings then once they get a taste of that fame it’s gone with ya. But I’ll do whatever it takes to keep this relationship going, you make it work with champions, no matter what the cost.
And yes, this puts Hillary up there with the Boston greats. Heroic OT win last night in game 1. You want tension? The NWHL has got it: overtime penalty shot called in game 1 because a Beaut covered the puck in the crease. Of course, Hilary buried it and tonight went on to become undefeated in the finals. Not even Russell, Bird or Brady can say that. Instant legend status.
