Moving On From Brooks Laich Would Be Sad But Necessary

Brooks Laich has been in DC forever. He got here in 2003(!!!) and has been a great role player for the Caps since. He put together 3 straight 20 goal seasons from 2007-2010, including a career high 25 goals and 59 points in 09-10. But he has been hampered by injuries the last few seasons, and his production has grinded to a halt. He’s been toiling on the 4th line this year, but doesn’t really provide much of…anything. While he’s still a decent penalty killer, Jay Beagle will have no problem taking his spot on the PK when he returns from injury.

With a 4.5 million cap hit, it appears Laich will be moved at the deadline (presumably with a prospect and/or a high draft pick and the Caps eating some of the contract) for someone who will provide a playmaking ability on the 3rd or 4th line. Someone like P.A. Parenteau from the Leafs would be a welcome addition to the team for sure.

For right now and moving forward, I’d rather see Galiev in the lineup than Laich. Galiev has hands, speed, and the ability to provide a 4th line spark. It stinks to see someone who has been here for so long and a fan favorite like Laich get moved, but as MacLellan said, you have to do what’s best for business. Brooks and Julianne will be missed.
