Rumors Swirling That The Mets And Cespedes Will Connect On A 1-2 Year Deal
Metsmerized - Proceed with caution as I have not been able to confirm this with another media outlet, but according to Rich Mancuso of NY Sports Day, formerly of the Daily News and WFAN, multiple sources have told him that not only are the Mets engaged in negotiations with Yoenis Cespedes, but the two sides may be closing in on a one or two year deal. “A source at Roc Nation, agents for Cespedes, and involved in their pro boxing division, was able to confirm that negotiations reopened late Wednesday with Cespedes and the Mets organization. And two other sources with knowledge have been able to confirm that Cespedes and the Mets are meeting with a one or two year deal on the table that is agreeable for both sides.” “The source said, “Yoenis loves New York and it has always been his thinking to work a deal there.” What was once a multi -year deal, and one that the Mets would not consider because of their payroll restrictions, is now a thing of the past.” Finally, Mancuso cites a fourth source – a high ranking baseball official – who says “the Mets may be close to re-signing Cespedes to a one or two-year deal.” The Atlanta Braves have also joined in the hunt for Cespedes along with the Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, and the Chicago White Sox. Again, no other media source has confirmed this so thread carefully. But Mancuso is a well respected veteran journalist.
No. Nope. Not gonna get sucked in. Not gonna allow myself to get my hopes up. I dont care who is saying what. I refuse to be a puppet in the Mets’ little games once again. We see this every year where management says they are “in” on a certain player only to end up making a laughable lowball offer or a ridiculous trade proposal that never ever had a shot of coming to fruition. They buy a couple months of goodwill from their fans for seeming proactive even though its always smoke and mirrors.
This is just more of that sorta bullshit. “We were in on Cespedes to the very end!” “We tried. But at the end of the day it just didnt make sense for this club.” Get lost, Wilpons. First thing’s first, a 1 or 2 year deal is not happening for Cespedes. As much as the OF market has shrunk and as much as Yo seems to, for one reason or another, appear toxic to teams, there’s no way he signs just one or 2 years. There’s enough teams that have expressed enough interest that someone will bite the bullet and offer a third year if need be. At Yo’s age a 1-2 year deal, unless its like 40 per year, doesnt make sense for him. He’s not a perfect player but hes not one that needs to subject himself to a 1 or 2 year flyer. I cant imagine all the clubs that are relatively in on him hold strong and no one caves for a 3rd year or some options. I mean we’re not talking about having to offer an 8th year onto a 150 million contract here. And we’re not talking about a Nelson Cruz situation where he’s old or coming off a suspension or some other red flags. He’s flawed in some ways but hes fucking awesome in others. The fact that his price tag has fallen this low – even in the form of rumors and conjecture – is fucking crazy.
Its like this entire thing has broken perfectly for the Mets to sign him – even with the cheap expectations of the Wilpons – and they still wont do it. Fucking insane. They said they were out on him when they thought he was gonna cost 150 or 175 million over 5, 6, 7 years and now, it seems actually relatively possible they could have him for half that. Maybe even fucking less than half. Sandy’s excuse was that he fit for a short term playoff run but wasnt a long term solution. Well now hes not even gonna be long term, bro. YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE LEFT. Knock him over with like 4 years 90 million and just get this shit done. Still a steal considering where we all thought his market would be back in August.
