Bears Draft Report Card

Editor’s Note – Trying out different Bears writers. This is Bill. Leave comments on whether or not you like Bill.

So I’m already pretty fed up with Phil Emery’s ‘project player’ drafting strategy. The whole point of a first round pick is that he can come in and make an immediate impact. Obviously, that did not work out well with Shea McClellin and I can’t see Kyle Long making more of a splash than McClellin did in his rookie campaign. If Long can’t come in and win that Right Guard spot outright, I would have to call this another first round bust for the Bears. Definetly not the biggest bust (that would be a fucking impressive considering the list contains names like Cade McNown, Curtis Enis and Rashaan Salaam) but a bust nonetheless.

So yea. Here we go round by round:

Round 1: Kyle Long, OL, Oregon

First things first, this kid is a monster. 6 foot 6, 313 lbs, 15.8% body fat and comes from the impressive gene pool of Howie Long. Unfortunately, that is basically where the impressive list ends. Long only started 4 games in his career (read: 1 year stint) at Oregon and prior to that was playing baseball at Florida State. I really can’t see Long starting his first year but, to be honest, any addition to the offensive line is a step up in my book. However, Long would have been available later in the draft. Chalk this up to another Emery reach pick.

Round 2: Jonathan Bostic, LB, Florida

Finally the Bears figured out that drafting players from the SEC is, hands down, the best move you can make. The SEC is basically the NFL’s farm system and to not draft players from that conference is fucking stupid. Bostic is a quick, hard hitting linebacker that will fit well in the Tampa-2 system. He will probably play backup to FA addition D.J. Williams (who I am also a fan of). Just spent the past few minutes watching highlights of this kid and he is FAST but seems to have some trouble getting off blocks. Not a huge hitter but posses some quality skills. Plus, reppin #1 at the middle linebacker position = boss move.

No Round 3 pick thanks to the B-Marsh acquisition.

Round 4:Khaseem Greene, LB, Rutgers

Obviously, the Bears aren’t thrilled with their depth in the middle, which is why the picked up Greene, who started his career at free safety and moved to linebacker his Junior year. This guy has some obvious talent after leading Rutgers in tackles his senior year and was named Big East Defensive Player of the Year. The downside to being named Big East Defensive Player of the Year is that you had to play in the Big East to get that title. Greene will have to bulk up a bit but could play any of the three linebacking spots for the Bears.

Round 5: Jordan Mills, OT, Louisiana Tech

This is pretty much the point in the draft where I’m sitting there thinking to myself, “Hey man, change the channel. This shit doesn’t matter anymore and the Bulls are on” So that’s exactly what I did. Apparently Jordan Mills was big man on campus after being named All-WAC First Team for his senior year. Downside? The WAC sucks. Definetly not NFL-caliber competition to work against but everyone is saying this guy is a student of the game and possess the athletic gifts to compete for a spot. It is obvious the Bears are committed to helping Jay Cutler have a career year by keeping him on his feet, so this pick is just fine by me.

Round 6: Cornelius Washington, DE, Georgia

Gonna be honest, pretty surprised the Bears waited this long to address the defensive line. Obviously, there were a lot of other spots that needed more immediate addressing but I wouldn’t be surprised if Emery makes some Free Agent moves to shore up this area. As stated earlier, I am a big fan of everything SEC and Washington is no exception. He was projected to go in the third or fourth round but fell to the sixth round as scouts expressed concern over is lack of focus. He is an extremely dynamic athlete and could see some serious playing time if the club doesn’t re-sign Izzy Idonije.

Round 7: Marquess Wilson, WR, Washington State

So here it is. The no name from Washington State who is clearly a headcase. He was suspended near the end of his senior year for violating team rules and claimed abuse by the coaching staff…whatever that means.Shock city: the university didn’t allow him back for their pro day. Despite being 6″3′, Wilson isn’t quite the specimen you would expect out of a NFL player as he only put up 225 lbs seven times…bro doesn’t even lift. This kid’s a joke of a pick and will be lucky to make it onto the roster.

Overall, giving this draft a B. A reach for a first round pick coupled with some solid SEC drafting. The Bears addressed the biggest issue in the offensive line and added some sound depth to a deteriorated linebacking corps. Bring on those Bengals.
