NYDN - An Atlantic City casino is taking heat for serving fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese — and a big side of stereotype — on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Word that The Borgata served up a $24 special that many blacks might find offensive sparked a social media war, with some critics calling the move “seriously racist” while casino defenders called it a “tasty tribute.” “Our general manager of the restaurant is an African-American female who wanted to come up with the menu to celebrate and honor Dr. King,” Joseph Lupo, a top honcho at The Borgata told the Associated Press. “We allow our managers to run their restaurants. She did research and came up with an authentic recipe. It’s very clear these were his favorite foods.” The AP noted a 2008 article in Knoxville News Sentinel which quoted a guide leading a tour of King’s childhood home saying that one of the Civil Rights leader’s “favorite meal was the Sunday feast of fried chicken, collard greens, black-eyed peas and corn bread.”

I cannot imagine anyone seriously thinks that menu is “racist”. No chance anyone is serious. Like, I get it, those are customary African-American foods. But how is that RACIST? It’s not! Black people love those foods. And as it turns out, MLK loved those foods. End of story. It’d be like having a Barstool Nate menu and being offended when it had pizza and nachos and tacos and Vanilla Coke and the requirement that you ate it alone. It’s not racist, it’s honoring me. Anyone who thinks that MLK meal is racist is just another one of those “look at me, I’m so offended by everything” idiots.
