"This One's On Me": Jordan Spieth Ignored His Caddie's Advice To Lay Up, Promptly Chunked His Next Shot In The Water

Any time there's a hot mic near Jordan Spieth before he hits a shot, TV crews should make it a point to turn that shit up and put it right near wherever him and his caddie Michael Greller are discussing strategy. There should be a mandate in the TV rights contract. This is instant classic material. Spieth is one of the most cerebral, out-loud and downright neurotic communicators of the spoken word on the PGA Tour, and Greller is forever in the line of friendly fire.

On the par-4 fifth hole of the BMW Championship, Spieth stepped to the tee tied for the lead after two consecutive birdies. Eager to keep the momentum going despite finding the fairway bunker, he was convinced he could pull this shot off even with a large body of water short of the green. Here's my rough, subtextual translation of their exchange:

Greller: This shot is so stupid to even try that you might not even do it in a practice round.

Spieth: Watch this, you fuckin' pleb.

*SPLASH*

Afterwards Greller was basically like...

Giphy Images.

And rightfully so. He gets a cut of the prize money of course. There's also an $18 million bonus waiting at the end of the FedEx Cup rainbow he'd see a piece of in the event Spieth gets it done. That boneheaded shot could turn out to be a most expensive double bogey in the larger scheme of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

To his credit, Spieth bounced back with yet another birdie on the next hole. What a nut. You can't not love the unpredictable roller coaster you're in for whenever Spieth tees it up these days. Gone is his stunning early career of crazy consistency and brilliance. He's still great — 13th in the world rankings — but nowadays it's so much fun to enjoy Spieth as he lives and dies by every shot.

If Greller can put up with Spieth's barrage of cacophonous audio, you have to think he has a good feel for any situation no matter how much noise is coming from his player's pie hole. He was definitely right the last time I witnessed/blogged about their hot mic moment in Scotland.
