Rangers Sign Jarret Stoll And I Love It
From this April…
I don’t like this move. I love this move. I think Gorton has done an A- to A job in his first summer as the Rangers GM getting Stepan on a reasonable contract for the long term and locking up JT Miller and Jesper Fast for the rest of the win-now window while maintaining cap flexibility, but this is probably the best move he’s made yet. What is the one criticism you always hear about the Rangers? That they’re too soft in the playoffs, that except Kreider and McDonagh no one has any grit or edge to them. So how do we respond to that? BOOM, sign a guy with a drug bust under his belt. Try calling us soft now, nerds. While all the other dorks in the Metro division are trying to be dweebs and listen to the advanced analytics losers trying to “improve their team” and “sign legitimate scorers like Phil Kessel, TJ Oshie, and Saad who can be the difference in a playoff game” , we’re giving $800k contracts to guys who will probably spend 50-75% of the year in the AHL behind a guy who is making 75% of that in Oscar Lindberg if he produces as little offensively as he did last season. That playoff experience that Stoll can give the Rangers that everyone is talking about can be pretty invaluable to a team coming off a trip to the Stanley Cup and Eastern Conference Finals. Plus we don’t have to worry about a relapse or him getting in trouble because New York has never had a problem of athletes having issues with drugs that I’m aware of.
The only potential real problem I see with this signing is that when Stoll is inevitably brought onto the roster for the playoffs to provide Center depth, his girlfriend Erin Andrews hanging around in the WAGs section, trying to be the #1 celebrity female fan and getting all the TV reaction shots. Back off Erin, this is still Margot Robbie’s team. We don’t need a Shaq/Kobe leadership crisis on our hands.
PS: If there is a God this signing means I’ll never have to watch Tanner Glass play hockey for the New York Rangers again. I like this move if it means Stoll and Moore as the 3rd and 4th line centers to give the bottom 6 a shitload of defense then moving Hayes to the wing. If we’re just stockpiling mediocre Centers for no reason, I don’t get it.
