The Creators Of South Park Have Signed On For 6 More Seasons And 14 (YES 14!!!!) South Park Movies For A Sweet $900 Million Deal

Variety - “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have set an expansive new deal with ViacomCBS’ MTV Entertainment Studios that calls for the pair to produce 14 movies for Paramount Plus based on the enduring Comedy Central animated franchise.

The pact also renews “South Park” as a series for Comedy Central through its 30th season in 2027. Bloomberg News reported that the deal was valued at $900 million over the six-year term. That’s an eye-popping number, but it includes the license fees and production overhead costs for 14 movies and multiple additional seasons of the series through the pair’s Park County banner.

I'm on my way to the airport but I had to blog this. Yes, from a car, nbd. Because this is one of the wilder things I've read...ever???? 14 South Park movies. Not 1, not 2, not 3, not 8, not 12...but 14 new South Park movies. There are so far 12 Fast and the Furious movies and the original came out in June of 2001. To age us even more, the South Park Movie, one of the greatest musicals ever made, came out in 1999. And now, over 20 years later, Matt and Trey have signed on for 14 NEW movies. Like...what? The South Park cinematic universe is about to explode. I can't even fathom the creative juices needed to write, produce, and direct 14 new movies. Do they all have to be South Park? Or can they make more Team America/BASEketball/Orgazmo type films as well? How about a Book Of Mormon movie?

I love South Park. It's one of my favorite shows ever. But I thought about 5 years ago they would reach some sort of end date for the show and move on to other projects. Remember that really sad episode where people thought South Park might be done? Well that episode came out a decade ago. Holy shit.

Jeeeesus.

Maybe South Park will just never die. Which is fine with me. Will it ever be the same as in it's heyday? Unlikely. We see it happen in every show that is cutting edge when it comes out, eventually the creators get rich, times change, and things get toned down. It's hard to be as funny in 2021 as you could be in 1998, nevermind when you're now worth a billion dollars. I tell you what, if I'm ever worth a cool billy, I wouldn't be drawing cartoons anymore.

Not to say I'm not excited to see how this deal goes, of course. 6 more seasons of South Park is certainly better than 0 more seasons. And 14 new movies is a hell of a lot of movies, so it'll be very interesting to see how those go.

Can this be topped? No chance, but I'm excited to see them try.
